Off the Cuff Vol. 9: The Best Season Ever

It’s nights like this that re-establish your faith in baseball being America’s Favorite Pastime! This was absolutely the best end to a regular season in Major League Baseball history! We dare you to name another.

Coming into tonight’s play, both leagues had two teams tied for the final Wild Card playoff spot. At approximately 10pm EST, it appeared certain that the Braves and Cardinals were headed for a play-in game on Thursday while the Red Sox were poised to advance as the second playoff team out of the AL east, causing the Rays’ epic comeback to come up just a bit short. Boy were we wrong!

During a terrific season, that was unmatched by most closers in MLB history, let alone rookies, Braves closer Craig Kimbrel blew a save that eventually led to the Phillies winning the game in 13 innings and ending the Braves’ season. On the AL side, the Tampa Bay Rays entered the bottom of the 8th inning trailing the Yankees 7-0, but mounted an unbelievable comeback by scoring 6 in the 8th, 1 in the 9th, and 1 in the 12th to steal the last playoff spot.

I laughed weeks ago when Jeremy, PFB’s co-founder, suggested that Evan Longoria could garner some MVP consideration if the Rays completed the “comeback”. Given the way that Longoria ended the regular season with a 3-run HR in the 8th and the walk-off shot in the 12th – a shot that I predicted on Twitter less than a minute before it happened – maybe that’s not such a crazy notion after all.

Days like this are what make the sport so great for us and the legions of diehard baseball fans left across this great nation. Sure football is the current king, but even us younger fans with old souls know where the true drama lies! Don’t know about you, but we are looking forward to more magic this weekend.  We’ll take a few minutes to catch our breath before hitting you with our playoff predictions Friday so stay tuned for some post season insight from the Pop Fly Boys.
