Breaking News: Plane Crash takes the lives of Oklahoma State Basketball Coaches

In a completely different type of tragedy, the type that humbly reminds us that tomorrow is not promised to anyone, the Oklahoma State community suffered another tragic loss yesterday as a plane crash took the lives of head women’s basketball coach Kurt Budke and assistant Miranda Serne along with two others. This event occurs a little more than ten years after another plane crash killed ten staff members and players from the men’s basketball program.

The town of Stillwater is obviously shaken and stunned at a time when the atmosphere around the community was as joyous as ever. The Oklahoma State football team is currently undefeated and ranked #2 in the BCS poll, putting them on a collision course with the 2012 BCS National Championship game. The women’s basketball program itself had experienced unprecedented success under Budke’s leadership. The school president and women’s associate head coach were both visibly shaken when discussing the losses of Budke and Serna with the media.

While no one ever deserves to suffer such horrific fate, to have a tragedy of this magnitude happen twice in ten years to one community seems unusually cruel. Here’s to hoping that the football team’s success will provide at least a temporary distraction and respite from the collective hurt that is being felt by the immediate families of Budke and Serna and the entire Oklahoma State community.
