College Football Week 11

By Jeremy Sickel

1. Oklahoma State – The Cowboys are putting in major work lately after a 66-6 beat down of the Texas Tech Red Raiders. With two legitimate Heisman trophy candidates on board, Oklahoma State seems to have only one hurdle – Oklahoma – on their way to a National Championship appearance.

2. Oregon – Do the Ducks regret scheduling LSU to open the season? Maybe, but their win over Stanford made a huge statement to the rest of college football. Oregon is in the same boat as Alabama, needing the top 2 teams to slip up, but the Ducks do have the advantage of a conference championship game to the leapfrog the Crimson Tide to be next in line for a National Championship appearance should LSU or Oklahoma State lose.

3. Houston – The Cougars keep doing what they need to do to not only become a BCS buster, but also allow their record-breaking quarterback, Case Keenum, to be a mainstay in the Heisman discussion. Houston still needs a little help but, they should keep winning and if you couple that with the fact that there are teams ahead of them that still play each other, we could see a magical season here.

4. Arkansas – The Razorbacks’ only loss is to Alabama and they have some pretty good wins on their resume against stellar competition in the SEC. They have a winnable game before a potential BCS busting showdown with LSU the day after Thanksgiving. If they win that, the whole landscape of college football will be shaken pretty hard.

5. Wisconsin – I am pretty up and down with this team, but after further analysis their two losses are by a total of 10 points and both on the road. Other than those two hiccups they have taken care of business and their running back Montee Ball is going straight gangsta’ on the opposition.

1. Boise State – I have no words for this. I’ve been on the bandwagon since the Statue of Liberty play against Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl and they broke my heart. I am sorry to say that I am breaking up with the Smurfs. I can no longer pour my tweets and dedication into an effort that seems to fail me so much. See you around.

2. Texas Tech – Since that shocking upset of Oklahoma they have lost their last 3 games by the combined score of 159-33. Ugh!

3. Penn State – Thought about putting them #1 on this list, but they have been getting too much attention. For obvious reasons, we are all sour on Happy Valley, but they probably shouldn’t have fallen that far in the polls with a loss to a good Nebraska squad. The Nittany Lions finish up with a tough schedule, so we will quickly see how much resolve they have after what they have been through.

4. Florida – The Gators are out of the top spot finally, but they can’t shake the sour label. Were two guys really that important to their operation – speaking of Urban Meyer and Tim Tebow? Sure they have had a tough schedule, but a couple wins in that stretch isn’t too much to ask from a perennial powerhouse. Foreshadowing next week’s list – a win versus Furman will still keep them here.

5. Illinois – Mission almost accomplished here with “Florida Part Deux” on the sour list. The Fighting Illini are on a 4 game slide with a game against Wisconsin coming up next. If they lose to the Badgers, it will be very hard for me not to brag about my predicted slide here, after Illinois started the season 6-0.
